on

The 2014 Geneva Motor Show is now fully underway with many manufacturers are showcasing their new models and Alfa Romeo have brought their new 4C Spider convertible variant to the event in a two seater prototype form, dubbed the 4C Spider Design Preview.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider specs

The power of the model has received very little in changes, still powered by a mid mounted 237 brake horse power 1.75 litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine mated to a six speed dual dry-clutch Alfa TCT transmission that drives power to the rear wheels. As a result, performance is almost the same as the normal coupe model, achieving a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds before topping out at over 155mph.

The vehicle’s gears can be changed in sequential mode using the ‘shift paddles’ located behind the steering wheel.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider style and tech

The 4C is made with carbon fibre rollover bars, spoilers, windscreen frame and a lightweight canvas roof giving it an overall kerbweight of 895kg, making it 60kg heavier than the coupe version. Weight for the model remains in a 40:60 front to rear distribution and according to the company the model was designed so it’s aerodynamics minimise roof-down turbulence.

Alfa’s new model has received a new Akrapovic exhaust system built from titanium and carbon, which now features an electrically operated valve that can be turned on or off at the touch of a button. In the coupe, if you picked a standard exhaust or a louder sports exhaust you are stuck with your choice.

Aside from the canvas roof, the Spider is marked out from the coupe variant by several other features. The new 4C Spider features updated carbon fibre clamshell headlights, unique alloy wheels which have been created from one single piece of aluminium then finished in a three layer gloss white paint and bespoke Pirelli tyres have also been added.

Inside, the model gains door sills, rear bulkhead and centre console made out of carbon fibre.

When will the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider be produced?

As with the hardtop variant, it is likely that the model will have a limited production run of around 3,500 units.

The Alfa Romeo group are planning for their 4C Spider to reach production in 2015. Though not yet on sale, the new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider model is expected to have a price tag of around 45,000 when it does enter the market, making it a competitor to the Porsche Boxster S and Lotus Exige S Roadster.
