Mercedes has done it again. It has come up with a sports car that can keep all of its competitors at bay. It is is the new AMG GT. Inspired by the legendary SLS AMG, this car has been launched to compete with the 911 Turbo and the Jaguar F-Type. This magnificent sports car with blistering performance looks very promising indeed. This renowned German brand has always been known for it’s sports cars. With a striking F1 lineage and decades of experience in the field of motorsports, its sports cars are cherished by enthusiasts. Mercedes has put all of that into sheet metal to carve out this beauty.
Engine:
The sports car will be launched in two trims, the GT and GT-S. There is a brand new motor under the hood, a turbo-charged 4.0 litre V8 engine. The GT and the GT-S are powered by the same engine. However, the GT-S gets a 50bhp power bump. The GT gets a 456bhp version while the GT-S gets the 503bhp version. The cars are rear wheel drive units and the power is transmitted via a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. On paper, this car has the specs to impress even the craziest enthusiast.
Design and Engineering:
The car is built on an aluminium spaceframe chasis, just like the SLS. However, the wheelbase is 50mm shorter in length, giving this car a bonus weight advantage. In fact, it is lighter than its competition, 25kg lighter than the 911 Turbo. The tapering roofline and the long hood look class apart while the overall stance of the car looks brilliant. The design is similar to that of the SLS but there are subtle changes which give it a character of its own. The rear end is beautiful and the overall design looks contemporary and exclusive. The GT is customizable as well, with a wide variety of mods and upgrades like carbon fibre part s available for the GT.
Interior:
The car features a typical AMG central console. There are buttons on either side of the fear selector and a new touchpad also makes life comfortable when seated inside the AMG GT. The steering wheel is a flat bottomed one, with aluminium inserts. The overall quality is impeccable and the fit and finish is just brilliant. The roof also has a few buttons. They control the seat heating, the working of the extendable spoiler and the hazard lights. The overall design is very pleasing. It is a 2-seater but has a 350-litre boot, which adds a bit of practicality to this brilliantly designed sports car.
Price:
The car is priced at 110,000 Euros for the GT trim and 120,000 Euros for the GT-S trim. The deliveries will commence by early 2015. The pricing is steep and this car is surely not for the masses. However, with the kind of features and performance on offer, the price tag doesn’t look that steep. The car is a brilliant creation by Mercedes and it is sure to carve out a niche market for itself. Mercedes has not hinted towards a launch in India. I guess the enthusiasts here will have to wait for some more time before they can get their hands on this beauty.
