The BMW Z4 still remains an outstanding roadster, giving its driver the complete experience of blending both comfort and style with sports car flair. It has recently been updated very well, resulting in a fully modern sports car that still retains its original character. Neither of its competitors can boast its quiet ride, made possible by the folding metal roof; and as a two-seater, it is just about as practical as can be. As for its heart, the sDrive28i engine packs a punch at 245bhp, and is one of the best engines out there for power, speed, and efficiency. One important consideration, though, is that the more expensive M Sport versions tend to disappoint due to too firm a ride. The basic model, however, is fun and smooth to drive.
Back in 2009, when the car was first redesigned, the new model experienced a near-total makeover. Its aggressive, sleek style was an instant hit. The folding metal roof has been especially popular, mostly because it is both efficient and stylish. Keep in mind that the BMW Z4 can only be purchased with a gas engine. The most basic engine is the 20i and, while it only achieves a modest 181bhp, it still delivers a strong performance, even at very low revs. Then there is the sDrive35is, which is famous for its incredible power. Often this sports car is criticized as inferior to its competitors, but its direct and agile steering makes it a superior cruiser with a smooth flexible ride. It is also quite popular to its unusual rear-wheel drive.
The way the BMW Z4 grips the road is certainly a standout quality; this is due to the many high-tech onboard tools that keep it exceptionally stable. One of these systems is called Dynamic Stability Control. It combines brake fade compensation, corner brake control, and traction control. As for safety, there are airbags in the headrests to protect the driver and passengers in the event of a side collision, as well as internal rollover hoops. While the Euro NCAP has not yet tested the latest model, it will probably surpass the previous model’s 4 star rating for safety and reliability.
The interior of the Z4 is thoroughly high-class; only carefully selected materials have been used. The luggage capacity 180 liters when the roof is folded down, but skyrockets up to 310 when the roof is engaged. There is, unfortunately, a slim opening into the trunk though. As far as fuel economy, it really depends on which engine you opt for. No matter what, it will be an expensive car to run; but no more expensive than its other dealers’ counterparts. Finally, while the BMW Z4 may not be as good looking as a Boxster, and have a small trunk as well, it is worth every penny.
