The 2015 Toyota 4Runner has a striking new design that says ugly is the new pretty. For 2015, we can still select from the well-equipped SR5, the bold and rugged Trail model and the highly rated Limited model. All three models are powered by a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-I) and sequential shift mode. A manual transmission is not available for the 4Runner. With the standard features provided on the new 4Runner it is one of the best SUV values available.
Rugged Appearances
Toyota has gotten bold in 2015 with their new front-end design on the 4Runner. It portrays a look that suggests a tough, rugged and aggressive vehicle and its new gaping maw almost looks better coated with a layer of dust and dirt. The bold styling is not limited to the sculpting of the front end either. This year Toyota chose to emblazon its name in large three-dimensional letters as opposed to the traditional logo used in previous years.
If you are a serious off-road enthusiast, consider the 4Runner TRD Pro model, which is based on the Trail model. The TRD Pro provides some serious upgrades in terms of tire selection and suspension components. The TRD Pro is based on a desert-racing platform with a lifted front suspension. Another outstanding feature is the bright red Eibach springs, and higher-capacity Bilstein shocks that provide another inch of suspension travel.
Rugged Build
The suspension on the new 4Runner utilizes a similar coil-spring independent double-wishbone front suspension with stabilizer bar and a complimentary coil-spring 4-link lateral rod rear suspension, which is also fitted with a stabilizer bar. If you opt for the Limited model, you can take advantage of the X-REAS suspension that constantly adjusts for road or off-road conditions.
The overall foundation remains solid with the 2015 4Runner, which still relies on a durable body-on-frame design. This rugged construction coupled with the suspension features above puts the 4Runner in contention for one of the top SUV’s of 2015.
If you want to tow with your 4Runner you are able to pull up to 4,700 lbs without a problem according to standard SAE J2807 for tow ratings set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
Exterior features are designed for convenience and toughness. Strong bumpers, a reinforced front grille, roof racks and over-fenders provide a solid exterior foundation. The SR5 and Trail models come with 17-inch alloy wheels while the Limited edition is available with 20-inch alloy wheels.
The Trail model exterior reflects its rugged off-road intent with higher ground clearance, and its special hood scoop. The Trail model also utilizes dark gray mirrors, and front/rear bumper guards. The SR5 and Limited are fitted with bits of chrome and colored over-fenders and side skirts. You will also find additional convenience lighting on these models such as mirror-mounted turn signals and puddle lamps on the doors.
Exterior color choices include Nautical Blue Metallic (Blue), Super White (White), Blizzard Pearl (Off-White), Classic Silver Metallic (Silver), Magnetic Gray Metallic (Gray), Attitude Black Metallic (Black), Barcelona Red Metallic (Red). The TRD Pro model is available in Inferno Orange Metallic (Orange). Interior options include Black/Graphite (Black) or Sand Beige (Beige) in fabric or leather.
Fuel Economy
We all know that rugged off-road handling isn’t everything when it comes to an SUV and for a vehicle weighing in at over 6000 pounds, potential buyers will be curious about fuel economy.
All three trim levels come with a 270 horsepower V6 that produces an impressive 278 lb.-ft. of torque. This configuration results in a performance in the city of 17 mpg and a highway performance of 22 mpg. If you opt for the four-wheel drive option, the city mileage remains the same but the highway mileage drops to 21 mpg.
Off Road Capabilities
The Trail model is well suited for off road use with four-wheel drive as standard equipment. The Trail model can be upgraded with Toyota’s optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which disconnects stabilizer bars when very rough terrain is detected by the electronic system. This advanced capability allows for more travel in the suspension system in order to smooth out very rough terrain.
