There are different insurance policies that you should know about. Knowledge on these policies will help you and your car stay protected. Third party property damage and comprehensive insurance policies are the most common but there are others such as Compulsory Third Party.
Comprehensive insurance is so named because it covers damages on your car which might be caused by weather elements or accidents, theft and vandalism and others. However, some damages may not be covered, especially those caused by user’s negligence or being under influence and those that occurs because a car is unroadworthy.
Repairs are normally covered by comprehensive insurance or third party theft and fire policies. However, the insurer must authorise the repairs. The insurer will handpick the repairers they send you to, in most cases they pick nationwide insurers. Repairs for damage resulting from normal wear and tear or from electrical or mechanical breakdowns are not covered.
Vandalism will be covered only if you have comprehensive insurance. If you have a third party policy, say for fire or theft, only damages related to fire or theft will be covered. Accidental damages to the windshield are also covered by comprehensive insurance.
Comprehensive insurance does not cover you as a driver. If you or anyone driving your vehicle is involved in an accident, you will be covered by green slip insurance, or any other third party insurance. It is important to talk to your insurer about the extent of the cover to ensure you are always safe.
Rodents and weather elements damage will be covered by comprehensive insurance. You will also be covered in case your car is stolen. In cases of car theft, most insurance companies will reimburse you car hiring costs before your car is found. Lastly, car insurance is not transferrable. CTP insurance goes with the car’s registration but any other insurance is not transferrable.
